Document structure of ISO 15118 document family

The Basics and Fundament of ISO 15118

Learn about the ISO 15118 document family as well as IEC 62196 and IEC 61851 (including PWM signaling) on which ISO 15118 relies for the complete charging process to be carried out.

Get an overview of a typical ISO 15118 charging procedure for AC and DC charging with regards to the necessary messages to be exchanged. Delve right into the use cases related to these charging procedures.

Security Concept

Security Concept

Fully understand the mechanisms applied on transport layer and on application layer to secure the communication between EV and charging station with regards to confidentiality, integrity and authenticity: Elliptic curve cryptography, ECDH key agreement, ECDSA signatures, X.509 certificates, Public-Key-Infrastructures (PKI), TLS handshake, OCSP, ...

Detailed examples of creating and verifying XML-based digital signatures on the basis of an AuthorizationRequest and CertificateInstallationResponse message.

Certificate Concept

Certificate Concept

Public-Key-Infrastructures (PKIs) are a system for the creation, storage, distribution and revocation of digital certificates. You will learn about the motivations behind creating the ISO 15118 specific PKI structure, the different types of certificates to be applied as well as the non-functional PKI requirements coming with it.

Certificate Provisioning

Certificate Provisioning

The convenience feature Plug&Charge which enables an extremely user-friendly charging experience is based on the authentication and authorization through a digital contract certificate. This contract certificate as well as the corresponding private key need to be installed into the EV by means of a provisioning process.

You will be guided through the complete certificate installation process - one of the most challenging parts of ISO 15118 - step by step.

Authentication and Authorization

Authentication and Authorization

After the provisioning process has been completed, the EV is able to authenticate and authorize itself by using the newly installed contract certificate - without any further interaction needed by the user.

I will show you how this procedure is carried out, how replay attacks are avoided and what messages are exchanged during this communication phase.

Charging Schedules and Renegotiation

Charging Schedules and Renegotiation

The EV and the charging station exchange some charging parameters and technical restrictions for the charging process before the charging loop can be entered.

You will also learn about the concept of renegotiating a charging schedule and influencing the charging process through so-called PMaxSchedules and SalesTariffs, information which can reflect the current grid situation.

DC Charging Session Example

DC Charging Session Example

This masterclass on ISO 15118 finishes with an extensive chapter that will run you through a complete exemplary DC charging session.

This includes code listings of real request and response messages exchanged between an EV, a charging station and an IT backend which operates the charging station using the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) - currently a world-wide commonly used communication protocol between charging stations and managing IT backend systems.

Outlook on Edition 2

Video tutorial

putting the puzzle pieces together

ISO 15118 is only half the truth - it defines only the communication between the electric vehicle and charging station. But if you don't know how the PKIs and e-mobility stakeholders' business processes work to bring the complete Plug & Charge experience to life, then it's as if you built a brand new fascinating car - but forgot to put the engine into it. I'm here to fill that missing (knowledge) piece.

This video tutorial will lift your ISO 15118 expertise to a whole new level.

The ISO 15118 Manual is the basis for a perfect understanding of the standard itself. But this video tutorial goes even beyond. It let's you in on the implementation details of the necessary PKIs and business processes of all e-mobility stakeholders involved in the Plug & Charge experience.

Based on a drafted but not yet published standard. You won't get this knowledge anywhere else.

This video explains the so-called certificate provisioning - business processes, interfaces and data that needs to be exchanged between the e-mobility stakeholders using a set of PKIs in order to bring the user-friendly Plug & Charge experience to life. Exlusive knowlege which you will get nowhere else.

This is a free sneak peak into the paid version. Convince yourself of the quality.

Want to really understand Plug & Charge?

This VDE Application Rule prepares an international standard and closes the specification gaps of ISO 15118 with regards to the provisioning of digital certificates and cryptographic key material necessary for the Plug & Charge use case.

It is only available in German so far but will be officially translated into English as well when published in Q2 2017.
As a little favor, I translated the first passages and the table of contents into English (highlighted in green).

As soon as the VDE application rule is published, I'll set the link to that published document.

My video tutorial is specifically about chapter 9 which covers the necessary business processes, interfaces and data that needs to be exchanged between the e-mobility stakeholders.

As ISO 15118 is a digital, IP-based communication protocol for the exchange of information between an electric vehicle and a charging station, the players primarily interested in this technology are car manufacturers, charging station manufacturers and operators, the supply industry (providing the respective communication controllers) as well as e-mobility service providers.

But it doesn't stop there: My first encounter with ISO 15118 was during my time as a Ph.D. student and researcher at the KIT. One great thing about ISO 15118 is that the integration of electric vehicles into the Smart Grid (electrical grid) finally becomes possible, allowing peak-load shifting and ancillary grid services. Thus, any research institute, company or organization which deals with Smart Grid topics is as well part of the targeted audience.
It used to be. But time has changed and has never been more fascinating!

I am involved in major German (e.g. FastCharge) and European (Ultra-E) research projects, where car manufacturers, charge point operators, mobility operators, suppliers, and e-roaming platform operators collaborate to implement ISO 15118 in the field as preparation for mass rollouts within the next two years. The pace as picked up rapidly since 2016.
I know of some companies which are either in the stage of testing their ISO 15118 implementations (see also the FAQ related to Testing Symposium) or already having equipment production-ready.
As far as I know, every German car manufacturer (except Adam Opel AG, but, well, technically they belong to GM) as well as some European, American, and Asian car manufacturers are testing their ISO 15118 implementations already for a few years at the twice-yearly Interoperability and Conformance Testing Symposium. If I had to take a guess, I would say that most of them are going to release their production-ready implementations in their mass-production cars within the next two to three years.

Daimler has already a pre-release version of ISO 15118 running in their Smart EDs, with Innogy's charging stations being the only counterpart able to speak this version of ISO 15118.

With regards to charging station vendors, Innogy is still the pioneer here, but other manufacturers are gaining momentum. The list of suppliers providing ISO 15118-ready hardware is ever growing.

I plan to add an extra chapter to my ISO 15118 Manual which will provide a list of current ISO 15118 hardware and software vendors. And you know what? If you buy the ISO 15118 Manual, you will get this update for FREE! Pretty sweet, right?
The ISO 15118 Manual provides the perfect basis to get an in-depth understanding of how this communication protocol works in detail, how it needs to be implemented and what pitfalls to avoid. The knowledge condensed in this book is enough material for a two-week workshop, thus worth around 25.000 USD alone.
I have put all my knowledge into this first-ever professional guide, trying to make it as comprehensible as possible, saving you time and money while you try to figure out how exactly this technology works. There is no other book out there which provides even rudimentary as much knowledge as this reference guide. But, why don't you just take a look inside and see for yourself? I provide a free extract.
By the way: The only extensive information resource out there until the release of the ISO 15118 Manual was my Ph.D. thesis.

If you only want to know how the communication between an electric vehicle and a charging station based on ISO 15118 works, then the ebook may be enough for you.

ISO 15118 is, however, only half the truth - it defines only the communication between the electric vehicle and charging station. But if you don't know how the PKIs and e-mobility stakeholders' business processes work to bring the complete Plug & Charge experience to life, then it's as if you built a brand new fascinating car - but forgot to put the engine into it. The video tutorial aims at filling that missing (knowledge) piece.

That means that the video tutorial goes beyond the ebook, providing you with an incredibly deep understanding of how the Plug & Charge feature is supposed to work based on the exchange of digital certificates and cryptographic key material between e-mobility stakeholders.

The knowledge provided in video tutorial is very exclusive as you cannot get it from anywhere else.
How do I know?
Well, the standardization document which defines application rules for the industry on how this Plug & Charge feature needs to be implemented by the e-mobility stakeholders has not been published yet. I know it because I am the head of a group of experts which has written this document.
Due to lengthly publishing procedures within standardization organizations, it will still take some time until this document will be published - probably not before mid/end of Q2 2017. However, I think the industry deserves to be informed about this specification as soon as possible to get this technology properly implemented in the market.

Go ahead and take a look at the video teaser so you can get a sense of the in-depth information and quality of the presented content.

Oh, and you for sure shouldn't miss out on the BONUS content of the V2G Master package. This way you have the possibility to take part in live webinars with Q&A sessions to get your most pressing ISO 15118-related questions answered.
One of the reasons why I do not provide a printed book is that you cannot deliver updates or add more valuable content to it once it's sold. In my opinion, that does not serve my audience very well.

Since this standard is a very young technology, new questions and issues constantly arise as people are implementing the specified requirements. I want to answer those questions as quickly as possible. Furthermore, I constantly have new ideas on how I can add more value to my customers.
Just as an example: Wouldn't it be great to have an up-to-date list of current vendors of hardware and software related to ISO 15118? Well, I will take care of that within a new release of my first edition.

And those updates, corrections, and addendums will be provided to you for free once you purchased the ISO 15118 Manual. You even will get notified automatically by email once a new version of the ebook is available. Where else do you get this service?

The same goes for my video tutorial. If something changes along the way of the application rule specification, or if I have an idea on how to explain this complicated matter even better, I will let you know right in your inbox.

The ISO 15118 standard is currently in the process of being updated to an Edition 2. This will add some more features to the norm, some messages might change, some might be added. This rather significant change will, however, probably not be part of a free update, but rather be released as a new ISO 15118 Edtion 2 Manual.
Electric Vehicle (EV) charging communication in the form of the Combined Charging System (CCS) is a core enabling technology for fast charging EVs as well as for future Smart Grid integration. Its interoperability is key for user acceptance and economies of scale, but at the same time a major technical challenge due to the huge amount of different implementations, individual use cases and requirements on a diverse global market.

The ISO/IEC 15118 Testing Symposium embraces this challenge and brings together companies from the smart charging community and their technology experts to conduct conformance & interoperability tests for electric vehicles and charging infrastructures or respective Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and communication controllers.

This is a hands-on event digging deep into implementing, supporting and testing interoperability. By participating at this event your company or organization benefits through unprecedented networking with international technology experts in the area of smart charging communication.

The next (6th) Testing Symposium will take place at VEDECOM in Versailles (France) on June 22-23, 2017. My ISO 15118 Masterclass is a perfect preparation for this next event.
Here is a group photo from the Testing Symposium in South Korea which took place in November 2016. In total, 36 companies (80 participants) from 10 countries worldwide, amongst others USA, Germany, Spain, Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, and Australia gathered on the South Korean Island Jeju to test their ISO 15118 implementations.
By the way: The fourth guy from the right in the first row is me.
Actually, yes. There is an open source reference implementation available, both for electric vehicles and charging stations. It includes every feature specified within the ISO 15118 standard. This reference implementation is release on the GitHub platform under the project name RISE V2G. Is is written in Java and license under the Eclipse Public License (EPL 1.0).

Furthermore, there is the OpenV2G project, a library written in C which provides an implementation of the EXICodec (the encoder and decoder of EXI messages). However, contrary to RISE V2G, it does not contain the complete state machine as defined by ISO 15118.
No, the price does not include value added taxes (VATs). Since I am selling worldwide, the taxes are very country-specific. Especially the EU has its own set of rules regarding VAT.

You will be prompted with a question regarding your location upon purchase, based on which VAT will be added or not.

Head of experts group defining application rules for ISO 15118 certificate handling

The ISO 15118 standard only defines the communication between electric vehicles and charging stations. But other entities, such as charge point operators, car manufacturers, and mobility operators need to be involved in a certificate provisioning and revocation process to successfully carry out the authentication, authorization and billing process.

Therefore, the German standardization experts group DKE/AK 901.0.115 "Information security in electric mobility" has been formed to define a VDE Application Rules document for the industry.
I have been leading this experts group since September 2016. The resulting document will be available in the second quarter of 2017.
